- Abstract
Objective: this study aimed to understand how the dynamics of sensemaking and sensegiving influence people's commitment in a strategy opening process. Methodology/approach: the study is qualitative in nature with a descriptive approach. We carried out a unique case study in a consulting engineering company that, for the first time in its history, implemented a strategic management process guided by greater inclusion and transparency. Three data collection instruments were used: semi-structured interview, participant observation and documentation analysis. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Main results: The results suggest that managers and employees create ambiguous senses of inclusion and exclusion throughout the process, with different effects on commitment. Only from the greater involvement of people located at different hierarchical levels, such dynamics trigger a positive pattern of commitment and shared interpretations. Theoretical/methodological contributions: these results contribute by describing the way in which people attribute meaning to the actions of top management, considering the complexities inherent to the processes of opening the strategy. Thus, executives are also informed about their practices oriented towards greater transparency and inclusion in strategy making. Relevance/originality: scholars state that the literature still needs research that investigates in a more integrated way the relationship between sensemaking, sensegiving, people's commitment and the results related to the strategic implementation process. The purpose of the article was to contribute to filling this research gap.
