- Abstract
It is extremely difficult to accomplish denture retention in a patient who has extensively resorbed alveolar bone and lacks of sublingual fold. Suction-effective complete dentures can enhance retention and support by temporarily forming negative pressure at the internal surface of the denture base during swallowing and chewing. The aim of this case report is to describe the management of extensively resorbed alveolar bone and lack of sublingual fold using suction-effective complete denture. A 63-year-old male with extensively resorbed alveolar bone and lack of sublingual demanding new dentures. Considering the high expectations for retention and masticatory efficiency of dentures, fabricating complete dentures with suction-effective dentures was planned. A preliminary impression was taken without applying pressure on the retromolar pad area, and a diagnostic cast was fabricated. Following that, a custom tray was created, the final impression was taken, and a gothic arch was traced to determine the centric relation and vertical dimension. Then, lingualized occlusion was formed by placing anatomic teeth on the maxilla and non-anatomic teeth on the mandible. Patients with extensively resorbed alveolar bone and lack of sublingual fold can achieve satisfying retention and function by using a suction-effective complete denture.
