Textile Research Provided Space Shuttle Heat Shields.
- Abstract
The article reports that the Albany International Research Co. was pleased with the performance of the flame-resistant, insulating fabric they designed for the space shuttle Columbia. The author notes that the fabric is a felt made with DuPont Nomex fiber. The company developed three versions of the fabric for Rockwell International for use in different parts of the space shuttle, as well as fabrics for astronaut uniforms. Albany International Research Co. was founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates in the 1940s and develops flame resistant fabrics for the United States Air Force.
