- Abstract
Aim: This study aims to evaluate the spirochaetes population in patients with intraoral orthodontic appliances for different time period. Objective: Orthodontic appliances are placed in mouth for a long period. This study is conducted to analyze the role that spirochaetes population plays in the oral health of patients wearing intraoral orthodontic appliances. This will help us to manage or maintain the oral health of the patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 samples were collected from patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and were subdivided into three groups of 10 patients each based on their duration of treatment into Group A (3 months), Group B (6 months), and Group C (>6 months). Plaque sample was taken using a sterile toothpick and the smear was stained with dilute carbolfuchsin and examined under oil immersion objective and in each smear >100 fields were examined. Results: The mean percent age value of spirochaetes of the group with patients having the intraoral appliances for <3 months (Group A) is 35.38, next Group B with appliance duration for 6 months is 43.33, and for >6 months is 46.66. There is an increase proportionate to the duration of intraoral appliance. Conclusion: In this study, it is proved that increase in the duration of treatment increases the population of spirochaetes compared to other bacteria.
