Handbook of Gentrification Studies.
- Authors
Raju, Saraswati
- Abstract
Earlier, the term gentrification simply meant a process of changing the character of a less affluent neighborhood and the influx therein of wealthier residents and businesses through renovations in physical infrastructure, housing and other urban amenities - a form of urban renewal. According to the author, rather than the binaries that seem to be the hallmark of gentrification studies, an intersectional and comparative view of gender-gentrification nexus would help us decode different ways oppression takes place and how they are negotiated through the process of gentrification. The next section which contains types of gentrification - I must admit, was an eye-opener - from the familiar slum gentrification moving to gentrification of wilderness - exploring the link between rural gentrification and wilderness.
