The essay examines the years spent in Kansas by college football star and U.S. government official Arthur Allen Fletcher as a means to explore how his education and early political career influenced his later professional development. He attended Washburn University, where he faced racism as a football player. He associated with Kansas' Republican Party and worked on the gubernatorial campaign of Kansas politician Fred Hall.
