- Abstract
Proper diet and nutrition during pregnancy are essential for healthy fetal growth and development. It is especially important that expectant mothers are aware of the effects that vitamin and nutrient deficiencies can have on their unborn child, as well as the benefits of adequate dietary intake. Without the proper consumption of essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, fetuses have the potential to develop mental, physiological, and social inadequacies. Many fundamental elements exist within an expectant mother's diet, however the goal of this literature review is to communicate the effects of three well documented nutrients and the outcomes these specific essentials can have on an unborn fetus, as well as the current issues with patient compliance and sufficient dietary intake during pregnancy.
