- Abstract
The authors of this article respond to a letter from Chen et al regarding their previous work on the relationship between knee osteoarthritis (OA) and falls. They explain that their study controlled for co-occurring conditions based on a review of the literature, but did not consider the severity of individual conditions. They agree that disease severity can be an important factor in falls and suggest that further research is needed to determine if the severity of co-occurring conditions differs between those with knee OA and those without. However, they maintain that fall prevention is important for individuals with knee OA due to the increased risk of falls. The authors also address concerns about the inclusion of heart disease, medication use, and chronic kidney disease in their study, providing additional analysis and confirming that knee OA remains a significant predictor of falls. They reference another study that supports fall prevention efforts for all stages of knee OA.
