- Abstract
This article analyzes the production of scientific and media discourses about the tattooed body during the first half of the 20th century. In the course of the text, we will discuss how the discursive strategy of privileged institutions for the production and circulation of discourses, notably science and the press, invested in the construction of an image of the tattoo associated with deviance, criminality and a supposed moral insufficiency of its bearer. As a result, the tattooed were represented as potentially criminals and constantly placed under suspicion through an association between tattooing and criminality which, although it oscillated between lombrosian notions of the born criminal and the sociological notion of the subject as a product of the social environment, did not hesitate in blurring the margins between the tattooed subject and the potentially criminal subject.
