- Abstract
In the present report, we describe a rare case of epithelioid mesothelioma in a buffalo. The carcass of a buffalo was submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CVAS), Mannuthy from the abattoir of the Department of Livestock Products Technology, Mannuthy. Gross lesions observed were velvety plaque like multiple tumour nodules distributed over the lungs, diaphragm and walls of the thoracic cavity. The histopathology sections revealed sheets of polygonal to cuboidal epithelioid cells with lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm, eccentric and vesicular round nuclei, finely stippled chromatin and poorly defined nucleoli. Marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis were noted in neoplastic cells. The cells were seen arranged in a solid pattern with minimal to moderate amount of fibrovascular stroma. On the basis of histopathology, the present tumour was diagnosed as diffuse thoracic pleural epithelioid mesothelioma in an adult buffalo. This should be considered in differential diagnosis of conditions like metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lungs, uterus, or gastrointestinal tract.
