- Abstract
The article focuses on masculinity studies as a field of both research and pedagogy. It attempts to answer the following questions: Why do we need to focus on the study of men and masculinities? What are the benefits of not only researching men but also teaching masculinity studies? The research methods used in the article include the analysis of scholarly literature, two structured focus group interviews with students who attended ‘Introduction to Masculinity Studies’ at Vilnius University in 2004 and 2006 (the groups of 10 and 9 students respectively) and participant observation. These data are supplemented by the analysis of the representative opinion survey ‘The Crisis of Male Roles in Lithuania’ (2002) and a wide array of literature theorizing men and masculinities. The article argues that in order to grasp gender relations better we need to develop a more sophisticated theorization of masculinities in Lithuania and in the post-Soviet region and to take seriously both the national and global contexts of manhood. The analysis of different forms of masculinities is crucial in overcoming the dominant male stereotypes and in countering sexist masculine practices. Teaching masculinity studies can challenge traditional cultural concepts of masculinity among male and female students and promote equitable gender relations.
