- Abstract
The article traces the history of silver hallmarks at the back of Native American and Southwestern-style jewelry. Topics discussed include a 1300 law approved by Edward II that prohibited the sale of silver items without a hallmark, role of culture in the refusal of Native Americans to hallmark their wares in the 1800s, and the decision of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board (IACB) to implement a hallmarking system due to opportunists in the jewelry trade in the 1930s.
