- Abstract
The article presents a research on the effect of brief alcohol reduction intervention on health care utilization of elders. The study involved the participation of male aged 55 years and older who drink alcohol more than guideline limits in an effective randomized primary-care based clinical trial to reduce drinking. Repeated measures were made to evaluate short- and long-term changes in both impatient and outpatient utilization. An evaluation of stage of change (SOC) was also assessed to test interaction between SOC and the intervention. The study revealed that the SOC did not moderate the effect of the intervention. It is suggested that cost-effective intervention to reduce drinking may spur efforts to seek health care.
