- Abstract
Both Chile and Argentina have a history of neoliberalization, but while neoliberal reforms brought social unrest to Argentina in 2001 after Menem's "economic miracle", in recent years Chile has decided to end a neoliberal era through a plebiscite for a new constitution. One single element is not enough to explain this difference. For this reason, in this article we will explain what neoliberalism has meant for the history of both countries in terms of "state capacity". The cost paid by society for neoliberalization is not only social or economic inequality, but also the damage to the state's capacity for further development.
