- Abstract
The cutoff used to define "geriatric" has ranged from 60 to 80 years of age. Few studies have been conducted to rigorously determine where this cutoff should be. Of 90 348 adult hip-fracture patients, the age distribution by gender shows that the older patients were predominantly female, while the younger patients were predominantly male. Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) incrementally increased with age. Injury severity score (ISS) and associated injuries incrementally decreased with age. Although increased age and CCI did have an effect on mortality, there were no clear cutoffs identified and these effects were significantly less than that of ISS. The current study was embarked upon with the preconceived notion that there should be an ideal cutoff at which to determine when hip fractures should be classified as "geriatric." Although all studied factors seem to trend with age, no such cutoff could be identified.
