- Abstract
Similarly, authors may point to family firm's propensity to value socioemotional wealth (SEW; [1]) as family firms may place higher value on the family's affective needs. While they expectedly find that family firm innovation is enhanced when family and nonfamily employees communicate and have a shared understanding of "who knows what", these authors unexpectedly find that the communication effects for family and nonfamily employees differ, which ultimately hampers innovation in family firms. As the field of family business research has advanced, we have concluded that family firms differ from nonfamily firms in a variety of ways ([6]). Together, these dimensions create a matrix with four types of family business (FB) studies: (1) Embedded FB Studies, (2) Challenger FB Studies, (3) Integrative FB Studies, and (4) Generalized FB Studies (see Figure 1).
