- Title
THE SELECTION OF SCIENCE PRINCIPLES SUITABLE AS GOALS OF INSTRUCTION IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
- Authors
Robertson, Martin L.
- Abstract
The article discusses the adoption of the principles of science as goals of instruction in the elementary classes, that is for the first six grades of usual setup of school. One of the criterions for a statement to be adopted as a principle is that the statement should be a generalization. It should be a clear statement of a process or interaction which is capable to be illustrated. The sources used by the author to meet the criteria include various Master's theses such as Fred Moore's "Determination of the Principles of Chemistry" and Adrin Kay's "Determination of the Scientific Principles as Found in Six Widely Used Physics Texts." For the selection of the principles, a jury of three science teachers was formed by the author. The jury compared each statement with the criteria and then accepted or rejected the statement as a principle. The jury did not accept definitions as principles.
