- Title
Doom for handloom.
- Abstract
The article reports that the handloom industry in India is on the verge of collapse despite concerted efforts by the government to protect region-specific products through Geographical Indication (Gis) Act. The industry is facing the looming threat of fake products, increasing unemployment and lack of will on the part of textile authorities to correct the flaws in the system. Banarassi saree and brocade, one of the product categories that fall under the Gis Act faces the biggest threat from pass-offs produced by powerlooms of Surat.
