- Abstract
The article discusses a decision by the Tasmanian Parliamentary Labor Party to stop the flooding of the Franklin River for hydroelectric purposes. Despite the decision conservationists are concerned about the threat to wilderness areas in South West Tasmania. The article discusses what constitutes a wilderness area. The article discusses the threat posed to the area by the Hydro-Electric Commission (HEC), established in Tasmania in 1947. The article discusses the HEC's claims that power demands in Tasmania will increase at least 1.8 per cent per year from 1980 until 2000.
