- Title
Joe Turner's Come and Gone: An Experiment in "Race-Conscious" Casting.
- Authors
Wilson, Melinda D.
- Abstract
In this article the author relates her experience of directing the play "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," by August Wilson, at California State University, Sacramento, in November, 2006. Due to a limited population of African American theatre students, the author chose to cast certain characters without regard to their intended race. She comments on the appropriateness and challenges of nontraditional casting in terms of her choices for this production. She further considers the specific challenges of nontraditional casting for a play written by August Wilson, stated to have been opposed to the practice.
