- Abstract
Richter- b and m are, in general, estimated independently. However, when the two parameters are to be estimated from an earthquake catalog by a parametric approach, they are linked through a probabilistic density function so that the estimation of one parameter requires the value of the other. To solve this problem, the effect of one parameter on the estimation of the other was investigated with simulated earthquake catalogs. The investigation revealed that the estimation of Richter- b was not sensitive to the m value. An accurate enough Richter- b could be estimated using the observed maximum magnitude, m, of the earthquake catalog. On the other hand, the estimation of m was quite sensitive to b. The m estimate increases as the b value increases. Therefore, it is recommended to estimate b first using m and then to estimate m using the b value that was just estimated. In addition, the efficiency of an iterative scheme was investigated. It turned out that the iterative scheme further improves the b estimate when using m. This scheme also yields an m estimate comparable to that obtained when using the true b value.
