- Abstract
Studenata Reka torrent is one of the most active and extremely damaging torrents in Bulgaria. Its water catchment area is located on the southern slope of Ograjden Mountain. It is on the territory of Parvomay State Forest Service, Blagoevgrad. The torrent attracted attention after its arrivals on May 9th, 2000 and September 26th, 2001. The registered maximum flow is 170 - 200 m3/s. It is the largest rate for the period after 1970s. The sediment deposits in the Raychovitsa locality are the main danger to the villages and the road infrastructure. Its area is 4.2 ha and the volume of deposited sediments is over 500 000 m3. It was made a characteristic of the main factors influencing the manifestation of erosion - climate, relief, soils, and vegetation. For the catchment area, the combination between them creates a prerequisite for active erosion and torrents. The annual rainfall almost coincides with the national average. Precipitation of 98 mm is possible once every 10 years. These high values create risk of frequent violent torrential. The slopes with sunny exposure predominant. The shape of the slopes is convex. The tilts are large. Combined with the high value of surface runoff from agricultural land, this provokes the formation of gullies. The watercatchment area is also characterized by poorly developed soils - ranchers. Their profile is skeletal, lowpower and undifferentiated. The humus-accumulation horizon is several centimeters thick. The low power of soils is the reason for their limited water retention capacity. The forests cover is 81.6% of the catchment area. Almost half of them are from Pinus sylvestris crops. The meadows occupy 10.5% and the bare lands - 3.4%. Despite the tendency to improve the water regulation capacity of the vegetation cover, the situation in the watercatchment area as a whole continues to create a danger of new torrential. The results of study shows that, since the recent arrivals of the torrential, the environment in the watercatchment has not improved significantly. This leads to the assumption that such manifestations of the torrent are still possible. Erosion control measures are recommended.
