- Abstract
The morphology of Nicsmirnovius eximius (Kiser, 1948) (Aloninae, Anomopoda, Cladocera) from Thailand was studied under optical and scanning electron microscope. New observations are presented, adding to the knowledge of Nicmirnovius Chiambeng & Dumont, 1999, recently revised by Van Damme et al. (2003). The adult male, not adequately described before, is also studied. Although some specific traits of Nicsmirnovius male were revealed, it is basically similar to males of some species of Alona Baird, 1843. The evolution of the parthenogenetic generation in Nicsmirnovius was not accompanied by modifications of the gamogenetic generation; the animals kept a primitive, `Alona-like' state. Our study underlines the necessity of a global revision both of small Alona-like genera, and marginal species of Alona, as recently their classification is unclear, and borders between genera are not drawn accurately.
