Abstract

The article discusses the extrinsic and intrinsic factors of tooth discoloration. It states that deposits of plaque pigments or calculus on the enamel surface and dentin or exposed cement are the causes if extrinsic stains, which can usually be removed with abrasive agents. While endogenous factors that may be of local or systemic origin is the cause of intrinsic stains. It presents several oral disorders related to both tooth discolorations. It also discusses the methods that can be used by dentists to prevent or minimize the risk of tooth discoloration.
