- Abstract
The seasonal diel activity of the freshwater sculpins Cottus poecilopus Heckel and C. gobio L. was studied in natural light conditions at the Arctic Circle (Messaure, Sweden 66° 42' N, 20° 25' E). The following results were obtained: 1. The species show a very similar autumnal activity pattern, including a phase shift to day-activity in winter. 2. There is no difference between South Swedish and North Swedish specimens of C. poecilopus as regards rhythmical behaviour when studied at the Arctic Circle. 3. In C. poecilopus there is a desynchronization for ca two months during the Polar summer. A principal scheme illustrating the annual cycle of the diel pattern of C. poecilopus is presented.
