- Abstract
The article discusses the Baptist missionary works among Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. It is noted that the first identifiable Indian convert was Japheth, who was involved with the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Newport, Rhode Island in 1674. Indians became interested with Christianity when two Indian boys from the Spokane and Kootenay tribes were chosen to study at the Church of England Mission in Red River. Baptist Hall J. Kelley founded the American Society for Encouraging the Settlement of the Oregon Territory in Boston, Massachusetts.
