- Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the case who has been diagnosed with Palizeus-Merzchbacher Disease which is a demyelinating disorder of CNS caused by mutation of the oligodendrosites responsible for the production of proteolipid protein-1 from the myelin basic components.Brain MR, brain CT and molecular genetic surwey were performed on the patient who appointed to the hospital while he was 10 months old with complaints of nistagmus.Four years old male was performed Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), Functional Independence Measure for Children (Wee-FIM).Also, he was evaluated for pathological reflexes, balance in sitting position, muscle tone according to MAS.The emotional status of parents were assessed by the Beck Depression Scale and the quality of life SF-36 (short form). The WeeFIM score of the case is 40 and GMFM score is 52.6%.The scores of SF 36 are 85 for mother and 104 for father.The results of Beck Depression Scale are 4 and 2 for parents.Balance and coordination exercises,swallowing therapy modalities and space therapy rehabilitation program were applied to the case with pervasive developmental disorders.The rehabilitation is still continuing and an increase in the muscular endurance in patient was observed. Low depression inventory scores of parents, can impact on the parents' ability positively influence to cope with the illness process.It is important to identify early such rare diseases and start up to the rehabilitation process with high motivation of the family.
