- Abstract
Considering the interpretation of the city as a society actions image and with respect to the necessity of comprehension of the human imagery for the construction of individual and collective identities, the main objective of the research aims at analyzing the context in which the urban landscape has been referenced over time and space by collective memory, embracing literary narrations from Manhattan, New York, United States, as a case study. Based on theoretical postulate on central research subjects, the methodological procedures consist of a sample of 99 narratives published over 196 years, organized by its specific location on a map of the administrative study area, in order to identify the quotation frequency according to different urban typologies (paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks) and planning over time (horizontal / continuity - and vertical / specificity). The analysis of the results indicates, intrinsically, the legibility of the studied area, with special emphasis on public pathways, as well as the necessity of further studies for the proper structuring of subsidies to the urban landscape planning processes.
