- Title
THE CAPITAL ACCOUNT IN THE UNITED STATES BALANCE OF PAYMENTS.
- Authors
BRANSON, WILLIAM H.
- Abstract
The article provides an abstract of the doctoral dissertation "The Capital Account In The United States Balance of Payments" by William H. Branson. The balance of payments can be viewed either as a constraint on economic policies aimed at optimal employment, consumption, and economic growth, or as an explicit economic target variable that has its own optimum level. In both cases a clear prerequisite for rational judgments, both by government officials and private individuals, is an understanding of the quantititive relationships between balance-of-payments items and other economic variables such as national interest rates, output levels, and general business conditions, as well as the interrelationships of the various balance-of-payments items themselves.
