- Abstract
The novel Bakhita, by Véronique Olmi, evokes the violence that underlines colonial memory, but also divisions due to differentiation and métissage. Born in Darfur in the 19th century and bought as a slave by an Arab notable and later by a Turkish general, Bakhita was finally acquired by the Italian consul in Khartoum. Later, she was brought to Italy where she joined the religious order. Bakhita finds itself in situations of métissage characterized by the domination of foreign languages and culture. In the article, we will first look at the notion of métissage, a term widely used and marked by the colonial imprint. Then, we will address the theme of the quest for identity in the context of the cultural métissage experienced by the protagonist.
