- Abstract
The article looks at social and economic conditions in Brazil as of 2013, focusing on the favelas, or working-class shantytown neighborhoods, of the city of Rio de Janeiro and on the city's preparation for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. It recounts the city's infrastructure construction projects and how they have affected the favelas. It reports on the growing interest in volleyball and other organized sports among favela youth. It discusses changes in the favelas in recent years, including their greater integration into the city, land use trends, and the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP) police crime-reduction strategy. It cites the Escola Bernardinho de Vôlei volleyball academy, noting it has opened branches in favelas including Tavares Bastos and Alemão.
