Preparing for Surgery: Evaluation of Lung Function.
- Authors
Torpy, Janet M.
- Abstract
This article offers the patient education page. The authors discuss preparing for surgery and, in particular, the evaluation of lung function before general anesthesia. To prevent complications from surgery the authors suggest that the patient stop smoking 2 months before. Also recommended is the use a preoperative exercise regimen before elective surgery and the optimization of medications for lung diseases along with improved nutrition. Medical testing that can aid in the diagnosis of lung disease include x-rays, blood gas samples and spirometry.
