- Abstract
This article presents information about the current state of stem cell research in the U.S. In 2001 President George W. Bush said that federal funds would be restricted to research on stem cells from embryos existing prior to August 2001. Scientists had warned that research would slow as a result of such restrictions. U.S. research contributions have dropped each year since the restrictions of 2001. The state of California has passed a proposition that allows for the disbursal of public funds for stem cell research. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine recently disbursed $12.1 million to various research facilities despite a legal challenge to Proposition 71 which allows such disbursals. Private funding and intitiatives like California's are helping to bridge the federal funding shortage.
