- Abstract
The study aimed to identify the characteristics of accidents caused by venomous animals in the west region of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Data were collected in the information system based on its Surveillance Database of Santa Catarina (DIVE/SC), referring to the incidents recorded in the period from 2008 to 2012, on the 37 municipalities that make up the 4th Regional Health Secretary of Chapecó/SC. The largest number of reported was caused by spiders, totaling 2605 cases. The most affected age group was between 20 and 49 years, representing more than 40% of reported cases, followed by children 0-9 years. It was observed the important increase (469.43%) in the number of accidents reported during the period, especially in 2012 compared to 2011. Regarding the prevalence of accidents, we observed that one of the less populated municipalities in the region was the one with the highest frequency of accidents with venomous animals. It is noteworthy that with the need for actions aimed at preventing these problems in the area west of Santa Catarina.
