- Abstract
Background: The number of corneal transplants in Canada does not meet demand, largely due to the inadequate number of corneas collected. Physician trainees can play an active role in the process of pledging and promoting corneal donation because they spend a considerable amount of time at the bedside. A specific training program for residents could help improve the situation. From this standpoint, it is first necessary to find out what is important for residents regarding this issue and what the obstacles to corneal donation are. Aims: 1) To collect the experience of junior physician trainees vis-à-vis corneal donation, evaluate their knowledge, assess their attitudes and perceptions with respect to the issue, gather facilitators and barriers; 2) to determine the perceived training needs of medical students. Methods: As this study is a preliminary evaluation of junior medical residents' training needs regarding corneal donation, we conducted 17 semi-directed interviews on an individual basis. A thematic content analysis was later carried out. Results: The attitudes and perceptions of junior physician trainees regarding corneal donation are positive. However, they know very little about the topic and forget to discuss it with the families of potential donors. They are interested in having formative training to learn more and be able to answer possible questions. Conclusion: In order to increase the amount of both corneal donors and transplants, it seems that there is a need to set up lectures specifically designed for medical students. Consulting all other stakeholders involved in the process (teachers, physicians, donation nurses and eye banks) as well as using other need analysis tools would help develop more grounded and effective student training on the issue.
