- Abstract
Carrying out controlled excavations in historical-contemporary cemeteries enables the development of new lines of research in forensic archaeology. Accordingly, the objective of this article is to present the initial results of the analysis of natural and anthropic alterations to the skeleton and the mortuary record of cemetery burials. Controlled exhumations in the Municipal Cemetery of La Plata (CMLP) and the evaluation of the post-depositional processes observed in the skeletal remains of the "Prof. Dr. Rómulo Lambre" collection, Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of La Plata, enabled such analyses. On average, the estimated conservation index was greater than 50%, this value being higher in those exhumations carried out systematically by our research team compared to the remains in the collection that were recovered by cemetery staff. The presence of roots as the main taphonomic agent was in evidence, as well as the appearance of adipocere, greenish stains, and remains of plastic or cloth wrappings as relevant variables in the analysis of the remains. It is argued that the information obtained that adds to knowledge of the dates of death and time elapsed between burial and exhumation will provide useful criteria for forensic contexts associated with regional conditions and the action of natural and cultural taphonomic agents.
