- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide a non-historical approach, i.e., an approach linked as close as possible to linguistics in the 20th and 21st centuries, for the work of the Galician author Ángel Amor Ruibal (1869-1930). We will highlight the modernity of his thought regarding his conception of language and linguistics. We will see that his approach to the linguistic sign in many ways anticipates or suggests the features that Saussure (1916) will later attribute to it. In addition, we will show that Amor Ruibal was a strong supporter of what nowadays is known as the representational character of language. In fact, his arguments coin-cide in essence with Bickerton's (1990). Finally, we will highlight the parallels between the Galician author's conception of linguistics and the modern functional-typological approach (Croft 1993, Moure 2001). Both approaches use a historical, comparative and functional method that is based on a dynamic conception of language which integrates variation of all kinds: crosslinguistic, intralinguistic and diachronic.
