- Abstract
This article discusses the influence of African American author and thinker Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964) on the development of the field of Africana studies in the United States. Discussing Cooper's 1886 speech to African American Episcopal clergy, the article examines her call for improving the social condition of black women, as well as that of poor and working-class African Americans generally, through education and job opportunities. The influence on black studies of Cooper's balancing of issues of both race and gender is then discussed.
