- Abstract
This article aims to analyse the rise and the development of 'Ilm al-kalam' with a critical point of view. It is an original Islamic discipline which discusses the basic beliefs and doctrins of the religion of Islam. 'Ilm al-kalam' putting forward thougts about the fundamentals of the Islamic belief and defending them against heretical beliefs and thoughts concerned with different cultures and religions is completely based on the Qur'an. By the help of the Qur'an, it tries to find solutions to problems about faith using rational methods. Islamic speculative theology is a branch of science which has appeared after the Prophet's death by defending with rational and logical proofs the basic Islamic principles explained in the Qur'an against heretical movements of thoughts affecting the Islamic society upon the subjects about destiny, free will and the nature of God and then developed by presenting proofs from the Qur'an and the Prophet's sayings. Therefore, instead of mentioning a definite time about when 'Ilm al-kalam' appeared and developed, it will be more logical to mention a period or an age. This is same for all branches of science.
