- Abstract
The article discusses research on the anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties of a brown seaweed carotenoid called fucoxanthin. According to nutrigenomic studies, the carotenoid induces uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in abdominal white adipose tissue (WAT) mitochondria. The carotenoid end of the polyene chromopore is suggested as the one responsible for the expression of the anti-obesity effect. Findings also reveal that cytokine secretions from WAT is regulated by fucoxanthin, thereby improving insulin resistance and decreasing blood glucose levels.
