- Title
BLACK MAYORS AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL MISSISSIPPI, 1969-1980.
- Authors
Osborne Jr., Cassie
- Abstract
The article attempts to establish a causal relationship between electoral changes in Mississippi's political arena and the nature of socioeconomic changes in four rural communities headed by African American mayors such as Bennie Thompson, Robert Gray, and Charles Evers. It mentions that African American struggle for electoral participation in the south was predicated on the assumption that equal access to formal governmental processes would alter the socioeconomic status for African Americans.
