Inclusion of fibroblasts and collagen fibrils in the cytologic grading of canine cutaneous mast cell tumors.

- Abstract
Our 2016 canine mast cell tumor cytology grading system[2] included nuclear pleomorphism (aka bizarre nuclei); however, the authors do not indicate whether this criterion was applied to the cases in their grading system. All cytology, and indeed all histology, is interpretative, and the current histology grading systems are far from perfect at predicting survival, outcome, or response to therapy. It was with great delight that I read the recent article by Paes et al, inclusion of fibroblasts and collagen fibrils in the cytologic grading of canine cutaneous mast cell tumors in I Veterinary Clinical Pathology i .[1] I would like to commend all the authors for their contributions to this arena and the excellent evidence-based study design.
