- Title
« PRENDRE LA RUE »: LES PARCOURS CITADINS DES SHÉGUÉS DE KINSHASA.
- Authors
DUGRAND, CAMILLE
- Abstract
This article looks at urban trajectories of the Shégués, the so called "street children" of Kinshasa. "Taking the street" means for these children combining their wish to enhance their self-assertion with different ways of socializing with their peers through a collective learning of specific behaviors (such as theft technics, use of drugs and violence). Between the promotion of values linked to this "different" lifestyle, the yearning to social recognition and the dreams of individual success, the Shégués build themselves within a society in which they continuously try to "becoming someone" and to simply "exist".
