- Title
HILDEGARD OF BINGEN: SYMBOLS OF CREATION.
- Authors
Minore, Anna
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the theology of images seen in the writings of the 12th-century Benedictine Saint Hildegard of Bingen. Questions are asked regarding the function of Hildegard's imagery in her works, how they encourage "symbolic consciousness," and whether or not she would be a proper candidate as a patron saint of the environment. The first half of the article examines the theology of image as described by scholars Paul Ricoeur and Gaston Bachelard. The second focuses on Hildegard's theology of creation and its role as an image of God.
