- Title
BARBARA BUSH'S RHETORICAL USE OF MILLIE DURING HER FIRST 100 DAYS AS FIRST LADY.
- Authors
Wertheimer, Molly Meijer
- Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the rhetorical strategies Barbara Bush used during her first one hundred days as first lady to gain popularity with the public. She contrasted herself with her predecessor, Nancy Reagan, especially in the way she related to the White House. Her most effective rhetorical strategy was the promotion of a media story about the marriage, pregnancy, and motherhood of the first dog, English springer spaniel, Millie. Both grew enormously popular through newspaper stories and photographs, which captivated the American public.
