- Abstract
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to explore the metabolic profiles and fat distribution patterns for Sumo wrestlers. Methods: The measurement of waist circumference, cross-sectional area of visceral and subcutaneous fat at the umbilicus level using MRI and blood tests: HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, serum glucose and insulin level were obtained for 18 young Japanese Sumo wrestlers. Results: Abnormally large waist circumferences, which were determined by the criteria established by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, were present in all Sumo wrestlers (100%), and fifteen Sumo wrestlers (83%) had high abdominal visceral fat areas (⩾100cm2). Only 2 subjects were categorized with high serum triglyceride levels, and 5 subjects were classified with low HDL-C levels by established criteria. None of the Sumo wrestlers had fasting hyperglycemia (0%), but 6 subjects (33%) had high IRI, and 9 subjects (50%) had abnormal HOMA-R levels. Conclusions: These results indicated that most Sumo wrestlers are able to maintain normal serum glucose and triglyceride levels despite a very large visceral adipose tissue area (151±58cm2), however, daily exercise training does not reduce all cardiovascular disease risk factors such as insulin resistance.
