DOMESTIC TERRORISM SHOULD BE A CRIME: FIGHTING WHITE SUPREMACIST VIOLENCE LIKE CONGRESS FOUGHT "ANIMAL ENTERPRISE TERRORISM".
- Authors
Wilson, Corynn
- Abstract
White supremacist violence has steadily increased in recent years, leading to hundreds of senseless murders in the United States. The shooting epidemic in the United States has caused cyclical firearm regulation debates and calls to classify the murderers as domestic terrorists. Currently, there is no way to charge mass shooters as domestic terrorists in federal criminal law. This Comment argues that white supremacist violence, often cultivated in extremist online environments, should be targeted and prevented by federal authorities proportionally to the threat it poses. Drawing a comparison to the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act of 2006, this Comment argues that Congress has the authority to create a limited, stand-alone statute to combat a specific type of violence, and should do so in order to properly address the crisis of violence committed by white supremacist extremists.
