- Title
Editorial. Hedged writing or uncertainty in research papers.
- Authors
Trevors, Jack T.
- Abstract
The article presents information on hedged statements used by researchers in their papers. Hedged statements in the original article would have involved use of words such as may, seems, possibly, likely, could, appear, generally and suggest, to name a few. These hedged words are used to communicate a degree of uncertainty or unknown information. Knowledge gaps exist that do not permit conclusions with a high degree of certainty to be reached. It is important that authors are extremely careful when citing their own past research and the research of other scientists, to ensure the original meaning is not altered.
