- Abstract
This article aims to analyse in detail the first historical critical debate on the Giottesque pictorial cycle in the chapter house of the S. Antonio complex in Padua, which began with the discovery of the pictorial fragments in 1835. As is well known, the debate was initiated by some key figures in the history of art and in the conservation and protection of the Venetian heritage: Pietro Selvatico Estense (1803- 1880), Bernardo Gonzati (1808-1852), Lodovico Gonzati (1813-1876) and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle (1819-1897). The article analyses, in particular, the opinions of some international experts who issued publications on Giotto towards the end of the nineteenth century and within the first decade of the twentieth century. There are also some hitherto unpublished notes by Lionello Venturi (1885-1961) on the chapter house, dating from around 1913. From the critical debate, there emerge, not only the origins of the 'perplexities' regarding the authenticity of the attribution of the frescoed cycle to Giotto that can be found in many subsequent critical texts, but also the close relationship existing between the intricate history of the room and its decorations' conservation and thus the fortune of the mural paintings, which has always been closely linked to the demands of the historical, artistic and monumental heritage of the Venetian provinces, particularly in the middle ages.
