- Title
Annette, Caroline and Reclaiming Liberty: Wordsworth in Calais.
- Authors
Spratley, Peter
- Abstract
The article offers poetry criticism of the work of William Wordsworth written during his visit to Calais, France, where he spent time with his former lover, Annette Vallon, and their daughter, Caroline. The theme of detachment from emotions in the sonnets is addressed, with the author suggesting that Wordsworth began to associate Vallon with liberty and politics. Works discussed include "The Recluse," "Sonnets Dedicated to Liberty," and "It Is a Beauteous Evening, Calm and Free."
